3 Things You Must Know about Basement Mold

mold remediation in rockford, ilMold throughout your home can become a real nightmare to deal with. Even a small problem can lead to serious health consequences and cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to treat. Basement mold in your Rockford home can be even more difficult to treat. But before you panic and begin thinking your retirement savings is going to evaporate before your eyes, there are a few things we want you to know about basement mold in Rockford, IL. Here are three things you should know about basement mold.
  1. Rockford will see anywhere from 30-40 inches of snow and 30-40 inches of rainfall each year. All of that moisture can wreak havoc on your home and lead to mold. Basements are especially susceptible to mold growth because they are below ground. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to avoid turning your basement into a mold factory. For starters, make sure your basement is properly ventilated. From vents in the bathroom to proper seals around your vents and ducts, you need to make sure there is enough dry air to keep mold from growing. Next, consider landscaping your yard to allow moisture to run around your home. If you live in an area that can flood, design your yard like a dam or a funnel so that water skirts around your home itself. This might require a bit of work, but landscaping is almost always less expensive than mold remediation. Lastly, check all the pipes above your basement. Water pools in low spots, and the lowest spot is usually your basement. Even if the problem is on the second level, you might wind up with mold in the basement.
  2. Scrubbing an area infected with mold will not usually get rid of the problem. Surface mold can be removed with bleach, but the roots cannot. You might need to replace drywall that has been infected with mold. However, if you have mold growing in an unfinished area of your basement or on solid concrete, scrubbing will usually do the trick.
  3. Mold from your basement can be blown throughout your home when you use your HVAC system. Even if your furnace is not inside your basement, mold can easily be distributed throughout your home when you use your heater or cooler. If you suspect a problem, make certain you don't use your heater or cooler until you take care of the mold issue.
