5 Steps to Take after Water Damage

5 Steps to Take after Water DamageIf areas of your home have been damaged by water, you may be wondering what to do first. Whether you live in Freeport, IL, or any other city, you can benefit from this list of important steps to take.

1. Turn Off Electricity and Gas

If you have a lot of water damage and it's still wet or damp, there is a chance of injury or further damage if the electricity or gas lines are still on. Make sure you shut them off before getting to work, and keep an eye out for exposed wires.

2. Document the Damage Immediately and Thoroughly

Take pictures of the damage to your home and property as soon as possible. Be thorough and make sure to get all of the damage. The better documentation you have, the easier it will be to file an insurance claim and get the financial help you need.

3. Pump Out Any Remaining Water and Rescue Movable Items

If there is any standing water, pump it out immediately and then rescue and dry out anything like furniture or clothing that you can move.

4. Call the Professionals and Turn On the AC

You will want to get a professional assessment because items that have water damage have an extremely high risk of mold growing. If not located and eradicated quickly, mold can also make it much more expensive, time-consuming, and complicated to fix the damage. Then turn on the AC right away. This will have a dehumidifying effect, which will help stave off mold. Make sure to only do this if there isn't any mold yet; if there is, AC will spread it.

5. File an Insurance Claim

The sooner you can file a claim, the better. Try to have someone come assess the damage as soon as possible because you will want them to see how much there is but still be able to begin cleaning it up quickly. Make sure you have opinions from professionals ready to provide when talking to the insurance investigator.
