Areas of the Home that Can Be Affected by Water Damage

water damage around the homeIf you have even an inkling that you may have water damage in your home, then you will need water damage repair and mold remediation as soon as possible. Experts like us at LDR do our best to reverse the damage that has been done throughout a home after water damage is present. Whether flooding, rain, broken pipes, or large spills are to blame, there are many places in your home that can be permanently damaged by excess water. Here are some of those places.
  • Foundations are made of concrete, and concrete is not meant to stay wet. Have you ever seen a cracked sidewalk? That is usually the result of exposure to the elements. While sidewalks can simply be re-laid, your foundation, if damaged badly enough, can condemn your home.
  • Flooring of any kind can be damaged by extended water exposure. Concrete and tile can crack, marble can stain and fade, laminate flooring can tear, and precious hardwood is doomed if exposed to very much water at all. Mold will grow and spread at a rapid rate.
  • Interior walls are made of wood lined with Sheetrock, and both can become moldy, soft, and brittle when exposed to too much water.
  • Ceilings are subject to the same damage as your walls.
  • Cabinets and doors, also primarily wooden, can warp when water has damaged them. Even metal doors can rust and break.
  • Your exterior walls are usually tougher than your indoor ones, but water can remain on exterior walls for a longer time, going unnoticed by the home's residents. Surprisingly, given the right conditions, brick and stucco can support mold growth. Wooden-paneled homes can experience widespread mold when damaged by water.
  • Your home's air duct system is vital to your health. Indoor air can already carry allergens; do not let mold become part of the problem. If your ductwork is not dried very quickly after water exposure, dangerous mold can form and spread spores throughout your home's entire air system.
  • When exposed to a strong water-flow characteristic of floods or leaks, vital pipes in your home's gas system may be moved or cracked. If you smell a gas leak, evacuate your home immediately and call for assistance.
  • Your appliances are usually metal based, and for this reason, can rust. In a worst-case scenario, the electric connection between your appliance and your home's electrical system as a whole can be¬†compromised, resulting in serious damages and serious injuries. We all know what happens when electricity¬†meets water. Do not let suspected water damage in your home remain unchecked.
As you can see, water damage is highly destructive to nearly every aspect of your home. If you are in need of water-damage repair, black mold remediation, or an evaluation for potential damage, experts can assess damage, repair it, and prevent further damage as best they can.
