Avoid These Common Summer Plumbing Problems

03A37500Now that summer is here, many homeowners are hitting the beach or pool and having backyard barbecues with friends and family. While the summer is definitely the best time for fun in the sun, it is not without its dangers and perils. Summer is the time of year when your plumbing may be incurring additional wear and tear for a number of reasons. Here are a few tips that will help you avoid the most common summer plumbing problems.

Clogged Toilets

Now that your children are home for the summer, your toilets may be in use twice as much. If your children are young, it is important that you show them proper bathroom etiquette to prevent clogged toilets. The most important rule that you should instill in your children is the use of only a few pieces of toilet paper rather than half the roll. If your children tend to forget, put signs around the toilet to remind them what should and shouldn't be flushed down the toilet. Remind your teenage girls that tampons and pads should never be flushed down the toilet.

Sewer Line Overflow

Summer is the time of the year when afternoon storms tend to hit the hardest. If the ground becomes saturated with water after an afternoon storm, this may cause your home's sewer lines to overflow. Therefore, you should have the drains of your home serviced prior to the summer to prevent this issue. Have a drain plug installed in all drains to prevent sewer line after a particularly bad afternoon storm.

Washing Machine Hose Leaks

If your children are home for the summer, you can expect the washing machine to be used far more often than usual. It is also possible that the laundry loads will be much more substantial. Unfortunately, washing machine hose leaks can easy flood your home. To prevent leaks, you should check the washing machine hoses regularly for holes and small leaks. If you find a leak, you should replace the hose with a stainless steel hose, as these hoses tend to last longer than rubber hoses.

Garbage Disposal Clogs

Many families hold more than a few barbecues every summer. If you happen to be one of these families, chances are you tend to have many guests in your home using the garbage disposal. Clogs are always a possibility, especially if the garbage disposal is used excessively. Fortunately, you can prevent garbage disposal clogs. Avoid disposing of coffee grinds, oil, grease, and rinds down the garbage disposal. If you notice a clog beginning to form, use boiling water and vinegar to flush the garbage disposal. The summer is the perfect time for families to enjoy themselves and spend time with each other. Unfortunately, plumbing issues can quickly ruin this fun.
