Health Problems Associated with Flood and Water Damage

dirty waterNot only can a flood be devastating to your home, it can put you at risk for many short-term and long-term health problems. Learn more about the health problems that are associated with flood and water damage, and find out how you can stay safe as you clean up your home.

During the Flood

Floodwater is dangerous because it can conceal hazards beneath the surface such as broken glass or rusty nails. As you walk through the water, you won’t be able to see these items and can seriously hurt yourself by stepping on them. The water may also hide live wires or electrical outlets, which can cause severe electric shock to anyone entering the water. Many people also slip and fall in even an inch or less of water, which can result in broken bones, head injuries, or even drowning. Because of the many dangers associated with floodwater, stay out of the area if possible. If you must walk through the water, wear tough boots with good traction and move carefully at all times.

Contact with Sewage

When water floods your home, it usually carries a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. Coming into contact with these materials can cause problems including the following:
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Rashes and skin irritation
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
Wear protective clothing like boots and gloves when cleaning up water damage, and wash up thoroughly when you’re done. Thoroughly clean any of your belongings that have been affected by contaminated water.

Mold and Mildew

Floods often create long-term health hazards when the area isn’t allowed to thoroughly dry out after a flood. Flood damage can spread deep inside your walls or floors, as well as your furniture and other belongings. The moisture that remains attracts mold and mildew, which cause a variety of skin and respiratory problems, including coughing, sneezing, and rashes. Because you can actually spread spores around your house as you clean, large patches of mold should be cleaned up by a restoration company who can safely remove the mold.
