It’s Time to Update Your Winter Storm Safety Checklist

In this region, it is a given that that we will be plummeted with at least one major storm this winter. Thankfully, most of the time we have a little warning and time to prepare. For most of us, this involves a trip to the store to make sure we are stocked up on enough essentials to last a few days. But, when was the last time you gave any thought to preparing your home for a winter storm? Your home can take a beating from a winter storm. Wind, ice and heavy snow can cause costly damage. This year, when you get wind of that first storm approaching, add these important items to your storm prep list.

Inside Your Home

  • Check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, and make sure you have extra working batteries.
  • If you have a wood burning fireplace, make sure you have enough wood to keep you warm should you lose power. Along with this, reduce the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning by making sure your chimney is cleaned, with proper air flow, and follow basic fire safety precautions.
  • It’s not too late to apply weather stripping around your doors and windows to keep nasty storm winds out.
  • Have an ample supply of working flashlights and lanterns, plus extra batteries. Try to avoid the use of candles for lighting since you may lose track of how many you have lit and where they are.
  • Never fall asleep with candles lit or a fire burning.
  • Have your home insurance and home restoration service numbers on hand to quickly handle emergencies like trees fallen into your home and significant storm damage.
  • Apply plastic to your windows.
  • Know how to shut off your water valves in case of busted pipes.
  • Never use gas or propane fueled camping appliances inside your home.
  • Bring outdoor pets inside

Outside Your Home

  • Stock up on salt or de-icer for your sidewalks and driveway.
  • Have at least two snow shovels, and make sure that one is heavy duty to handle large piles of heavy, wet snow.
  • If going outside does not pose a danger to your health and safety, periodically go out to clear sidewalks and driveways so that you can easily leave your home in case of an emergency.
  • Stay away from downed power lines, and call your utility company right away. This is true also for wires that look excessively weighted by heavy ice and snow.
  • Have a few large waterproof tarps to immediately cover any areas of your home that are damaged by the storm of fallen trees.
  • Have an evacuation plan in case a tree does fall on your home and poses a risk to your safety.
With the right safety precautions, a winter storm can be a reason to huddle inside, stay warm and enjoy each other’s company or just relax and enjoy the quiet stillness that the storm brings. This winter, don’t let the storms ruin the entire season for you. Be prepared, and if you do find yourself in need of storm damage repair, we at LDR Cleaning and Restoration and waiting to help you.
