New Year, New Safety Habits: Top 5 Safety Habits to Focus on for 2016

safety-habitsThe year is coming to a close and 2016 finally is upon us. While people are used to making resolutions in regards to their personal and professional lives, very few take the matter of safety into account. While you're pledging your efforts to lose those last few pounds or finally get that promotion you've been pining for, please take the following safety procedures under consideration and form better habits for the New Year.

Keeping the Smoke Detector Connected

It's no secret, smoke detectors can be annoying. So much so, that many of us have grown accustomed to disconnecting them while performing acts such as cooking, in order to avoid enduring the misguided blaring of this alarm. Nevertheless, this is also a surefire way to ensure that your home is protected from fire and smoke damage. While it may seem like a good idea at the time, please bear in mind that it only takes seconds for a fire to start and without a fully functioning smoke detector, you are on your own in terms of sniffing out the issue and reacting in a timely fashion.

Stopping the Do-It-Yourself Plumbing

Next, although hiring a plumber can be pricey, this is far superior to making a problem worse by attempting to fix an issue without being qualified to do so. A broken pipe or toilet can cause severe flooding and insurmountable damages. Unclogging a pipe may be alright, but save some of the most serious issues for the professionals!

Leaving the Stove Unattended

A great way to start a blaze, leaving your stove unattended can be one of the biggest mistakes you'll ever make. While it may be fine to step away for a few moments here and there, avoid any activity that will require your full attention until after you have finished making your meal.

Keeping Electrical Outlets Simple

Electrical fires are the worst! Flames that are difficult to extinguish, the best way to prevent an unexpected issue is by making sure you do not overload your outlets and sockets with too many wires and appliances. Work on spreading out the things that consume a lot of power and/ or things that are typically left on for the majority of the day.

Immediately Fixing Faulty Faucets

Lastly, a great way to cause a flood, ignoring faulty faucets can become a bigger problem than expected. This is due to the fact that, while occasional drops of water may not present an immediate issue when coupled with a clogged drain or a thicker stream of water, the sink can fill up fairly quickly and cause flooding. Overall, maintaining a safe home doesn't have to be as difficult as it seems. Focus on breaking and making these safety habits and make 2016 one of your safest years to date!
