New Year’s Resolutions for the Home: Creating Your Repair List

todo-listNow that the New Year is upon us, it pays to invest a bit of time into your home. For many, though, the weather isn't ideal for making significant home improvements. That's why now is the perfect time to make a list of your goals and project expectations for the year. What are your New Year's resolutions for your home? Here are some ideas to get you started.

1 - Conduct an energy audit to pinpoint areas of potential energy loss

Your electrical provider or a local home improvement specialist can help you to find areas of potential energy loss, such as around your home's windows. Small air leaks can become water leaks, creating a significant amount of water damage if not left treated.

2 - Inspect the electrical system

When was the last time your home's electrical system saw an expert for an inspection? This process is often critical, especially when the home is older. It can provide you with one of the best ways to prevent fires in your home. Have your electrical box inspected as well.

3 - Repair areas of water damage

Many homes have areas of water damage that go unrepaired for some time. Take the time, for example, to inspect your home's basement for water damage. Look along the foundation, basement ceiling, and along the wall edges. Do you see areas of cracking or crumbling, or perhaps even water stains? Have these inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

4 - Check the exterior of the home for damage

This is one of the must-do tasks to tackle in the spring after the winter months. However, you can begin doing so now. Look for areas of exterior damage or disruption to the roof, siding, or other exterior components. The goal is to get these repaired before damage seeps into the home through leaks.

5 - Take a look in the garage

Sure, you may have a large number of "things" to organize, but there may be more to the process than just organization. Are there signs of water damage? Is there damage from an unexpected fire that occurred at one time that you just never got back to repairing? Perhaps there is some damage from smoke. Keep the interior and exterior of your home's garage in good condition.

6 - Waterproof your bathroom and kitchen

Take a closer look at your kitchen and bathroom, the areas where water is prominently used. It's important to notice areas where water is seeping into the walls and floorboards. Waterproofing this space can take time, but it most often can reduce the costs for repairing significant damage later on. When it comes to New Year's resolutions, don't just focus on yourself this year. Focus on creating a to-do list of repairs and upgrades that can help protect your home and even help reduce the costs associated with operating it. With the right team on your side, it's easier than you think to achieve these goals.
