Prep for the Season with Our Winter Home Safety Checklist

Fall and winter bring their own special challenges to homeowners. You are probably beginning to prepare for the upcoming cold weather by checking off a list of necessities like a snow shovel, salt for the sidewalk, and some extra wood for the fireplace. You shouldn’t stop there.     Your entire home needs special care as we head into colder weather. Not paying attention to your home’s winter needs can end in costly repairs and an unsafe environment.   All that your home needs is a little extra TLC to get it through the winter. At LDR Cleaning & Restoration, we want to help make the process easier. Here’s our one-stop checklist for preparing your home and to keep you warm and safe, all winter long.

1. Schedule a home heating inspection

A qualified professional knows what to look for to make sure your heating system is ready for the season ahead. A technician should inspect your air ducts, check your furnace, and seal any leaky furnace ducts.

2. Get a chimney sweep

Your chimney should be inspected and cleaned every year. An unfortunate number of house fires start every year from the buildup of creosote in chimneys. Plus, a technician can inspect your chimney for needed repairs and maintenance.

3. Brush up on fireplace safety

You know the basics of lighting a fire and when to open the flue. But, it has probably has been close to a year since you used your fireplace regularly. Now is the time to brush up on fireplace safety basics like remembering to sweep out the ashes after each use and making sure you have a working fire extinguisher close by.

4. Prevent pipes from freezing

When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on the pipes that contain it. Eventually, the pressure becomes so great that the pipes break open. Frozen pipes can shut down your entire home water supply until the problem is fixed.   Unprotected and damaged pipes are also a recipe for a flooded basement. An ounce of prevention can prevent an unpleasant flooded basement cleanup.   Keep your pipes warm, and prevent them from freezing by adding insulation to basement, attics, and crawl spaces, where exposure to cold air can freeze the pipes. When temperatures become bitterly cold, open cabinet doors where water pipes are found and let the warm air circulate through.   For extreme cold temperatures   , letting a little water drip through will also help to prevent freezing. Finally, keep your home at a consistently warm temperature, both day and night. Make sure that even when you are away that the temperature inside your home never drops below 55°F.

5. Check Detectors

Now is the perfect time to check the batteries in your fire and carbon monoxide detectors. You should have one of each outside of every bedroom in addition to on every floor of your home, including the basement.

6. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst

The biggest winter home safety tip we can give you is to never believe it can’t happen to you. Be aware of winter time home dangers. Portable heaters, unclean fireplaces, and electric blankets cause home fires every year. Neglecting snow and ice removal can result not only in expensive home repair costs, but medical expenses as well.   Have a plan, and if disaster does strike, know that LDR Cleaning & Restoration is just a phone call away.
