The Risk of Water Damage from Toilets in Your Home

Overflowing ToiletIf you have indoor plumbing, you are vulnerable to plumbing disasters. Other than failures of supply lines, toilet failures account for the highest percentage of losses. The post-deductible water damage repair cost for such an incident averages $5,584, with totals sometimes exceeding $10,000. If you have running water, we have some facts about water damage that you may want to keep in mind.

Newer vs. Older Homes

When you are moving into a spectacular newly constructed home, you likely entertain few worries except proper furniture placement. Unfortunately, your new plumbing system needs to occupy a higher rank on your list of concerns. In fact, toilets in new homes are the most susceptible to sudden breakage, which causes the most severe harm. When moving into a new house, you should examine the fixtures to make certain they were installed and sealed properly. If you reside in a home more than 60 years old, you are more likely to experience slow leaks. These are usually easier and cheaper to fix. However, they can still cause irreparable destruction. Seals can become less secure as they age, and a faulty one may result in more than $2,000 in damages.

Overflow Risk

Backed-up or overflowing toilets account for approximately 33% of claims resulting from toilet failure. However, they are responsible for 58% of claims involving basement toilets. Basement plumbing is more likely to have inadequate slope angles, rendering it more vulnerable to drainage problems. Consequently, basement plumbing should be treated a little more gently than that on higher planes. Although this is one of the least expensive types of problems to fix, it may still set you back $4,000. Never continue to flush a clogged toilet, and seek professional help if you cannot unclog it yourself.

Cracked Bowl or Tank

Although unusual, a cracked bowl or tank is the most costly problem not involving a supply line. Repair costs will probably approach $9,000. Do not use toilets as stepping stools or to hold anything heavy. The temporary convenience is not worth the potential catastrophe. Because toilets contain many hidden parts, you would do well to inspect yours regularly. Check the tank for rust or breakage, and put a few drops of food coloring in it. If the food coloring migrates to the bowl, you have a leak. Mineral stains, water around the base, rust, and other signs of trouble should be investigated thoroughly, and you should seek help quickly for anything out of your league.
