Use This Home Checklist to Assess Hailstorm Damage

hail damageIt happens suddenly. Rain turns to hail and beats down on your home, cars, and personal possessions. If you think your home may have incurred hail storm damage recently, use this checklist to inspect your home and determine what you may need to have repaired to prevent water damage or other problems:

Damage to the roof can be difficult to spot. Look for signs of leaks or dents and punctures in the shingles. For leaks, you may want to go into your attic to look for any signs of damage. Check the condition of any equipment on your roof, such as air conditioning units, antennas, vents, or heating units. If you notice damage to the equipment, it's likely that your roof has damage as well.

Check your skylight for cracks or damage to the glass, translucent plastic, or seal around the edges. If you've had damage to your skylight, you should check the condition of the room or building materials around it.

Solar Panels

Clear silicon panels are more susceptible to damage than ones treated with acrylic. Either way, if the hail is 2 centimeters or larger, you definitely could have damage on them.

Windows and Siding

If the wind was blowing horizontally, the hail could have cracked the windows or siding of your home. Examine these carefully for any signs of damage.

Gutters and Downspouts

Since gutters and downspouts are typically made of aluminum or other metal products, it's less common for these to experience any damage from hail. Look for signs of dents or scratches, though. If you see these on your gutters or downspouts, you may have water damage on your roof or other parts of your home.
