Will You Need to Replace Your Roof after a Hailstorm?

hail damage repairYou should replace your roof roughly every 20 years. Over 20 years of exposure, Mother Nature's wrath can take a toll on your roof. However, there are some storms that are so violent and severe that they can cause significant damage to your roof in a matter of hours. Hail damage is relatively uncommon in Rockford, IL, however that doesn't mean it's unheard of. Most average hailstorms are the result of a strong storm blowing through. You can usually identify a storm's strength by the size of hail it produces, as it takes strong updrafts to cycle the hail back up into the cloud where it can gather enough mass to grow larger than a pea. There is a functional limit for most average storms where the winds simply aren't strong enough to blow the hail back up into the cloud. At this point, the hail is so heavy that it will fall to the ground (and your home). Normal storms produce hail that is no larger than a nickel. Hail of this nature can damage small or delicate objects (such as yard decorations or glass), but it won't do much to your roof. It takes a stronger storm than the average thunderstorm to produce hail large enough to damage your roof. Hail that is larger than a golf ball can begin to cause problems for your roof. Hail has been known to grow as large as a grapefruit, and hailstones of that size have enough force to cause problems. What type of damage? First, the hail can destroy gutters, chimneys, and HVAC exhaust vents. In some cases, the hail will completely remove or crush the objects. Large hail can also damage the substructure of your roof, potentially cracking or splitting the underlying wood. If you have ceramic or metal shingles, the impact can destroy them. Asphalt shingles are softer and suppler by nature, but that doesn't mean they will withstand a direct impact. If a severe storm has produced large hail and you are worried about the state of your roof, be sure to call a roofing expert to have them assess the damage.
